Lakshadweep is a scatter of small coral islands in the Arabian Sea, and it feels genuinely remote in a way few Indian destinations still do. Only a handful of the inhabited islands are open to visitors, and every traveller needs an entry permit before boarding. What you come for is the lagoon: a shallow, glass-clear band of water inside the reef, warm enough to snorkel for hours, with coral gardens, reef fish and turtles just off the sand. Build the days around what matters
An uninhabited, tear-shaped island set inside a wide lagoon and run as a single low-key resort island. There is no village and no market, and little to do beyond swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, diving on the nearby reefs and walking the sand, which is precisely the appeal.
The island with the airstrip, and the arrival point for almost every visitor. A long, narrow strip of coconut palm with pale lagoon water on either side, it has a fishing village, a few guest houses and dive operations, and good snorkelling straight off the beach.
The administrative headquarters of the territory and its busiest island, with offices, schools, a marine aquarium and the much-photographed Ujra mosque. Visitors snorkel and kayak in the lagoon, take glass-bottom boat rides over the coral and see something of everyday island life.
The southernmost inhabited island, curved around a large lagoon, with a culture and language closer to the Maldives than to the mainland. A tall lighthouse can be climbed for the view, and the island is known for its tuna fishery and its traditional rowing boats.
The main activity across the islands. Shallow, clear lagoon water makes snorkelling straightforward even for beginners, while dive centres run reef dives and introductory courses. Kayaking, glass-bottom boats and first-time sessions in the lagoon are usually available, though everything depends on sea conditions.
Boat outings across the sheltered water inside the reef, in traditional or motorised craft and often timed for sunset. The lagoon shades from near-white to deep turquoise as the depth changes, and trips usually pause for a swim or a snorkel stop over the coral.
Shallow lagoon reefs make it possible to observe coral gardens and reef fish from approved swimming and boat-access points. Travellers visit for clear water and an accessible introduction to island marine life; follow local safety instructions and reef-protection rules.

Season by season
Getting there from India
Agatti is the principal air gateway, normally reached via Kochi. Onward island movement follows the permitted itinerary and available boat transfers.
There is no railway to Lakshadweep. Rail travellers can reach Kochi or another confirmed mainland departure point before continuing by air or authorised ship.
No road links reach the islands from mainland India. Local movement is by boat and within individual islands, subject to permits, weather and published operations.
Know before you go
The Indian rupee. There are very few ATMs and card acceptance is limited, so carry enough cash for the whole trip from the mainland.
Malayalam is spoken on most islands and Mahl on Minicoy. Hindi and English are understood by resort staff, permit officials and dive guides.
India uses one national time zone, so no clock change is required. Daylight hours vary by season and longitude.
Tropical and warm throughout. The calm, clear season runs roughly October to May, while the south-west monsoon from June closes water sports and disrupts sailings.
Coverage is limited and BSNL is the most dependable network. A submarine fibre link has improved island broadband, but expect slow data and quiet stretches offline.
Tuna, coconut milk, rice and curry leaf dominate Lakshadweep meals, with fish often smoked, dried or curried. The islands are almost entirely Muslim, and visitors should dress and behave modestly in villages. Minicoy has distinct Maldivian cultural links, local dishes and the Mahl language.
